Saraswati's Son and Parvati's Daughter

Long long ago, Godess Saraswati, who is the presiding deity of all knowledge, desired to have a son. She went to Himalayas and undertook a long penance with this as the goal. After a long time Lord Brahma appeared and gave her a boon to have a son. She delivered a son as a result of the boon. The boy got up as soon as he was born and prostrated before her. He sang in praise of her in rhythmic and perfect meters; his utterance was the earliest poetry. Saraswati was extremely happy and told him that he embodied everything poetry represents. She also told him that there was only prose before him and he is the first person to bring poetry to this world. She blessed him wholeheartedly and named him as "Kavya Purusha" (काव्य पुरुष). As she wanted to have the pleasure of tending to her child for sometime, she advised him to go back to the state of a child for the time being, which he dutifully did.

Saraswati lifted the child and proceeded towards the sacred river Ganga to take a holy dip in the river. She placed the child below a tree and went to the river. The child started crying after sometime. Maharshi Shukracharya who heard the noise came to the child and took him to his hut. Maharshi Shukracharya was mesmerized by the child's beauty and composed a poem in praise of Mother Saraswati. Saraswati returned from the river but could not find the child. Maharshi Valmeeki who was close by informed her about the child being taken by Maharshi Shukracharya and took her to the Rishi's hut. When Maharshi Valmeeki saw the child, he also composed a poem that led to his writing Ramayana. Later on Maharshi Vyasa also saw the child and composed Mahabharata. Thus Shukracharya, Valmeeki and Vyasa become earliest poets in history of development of rhythmic poetry.

As Kavya Purusha was growing up and Mother Saraswati was enjoying the growth process, a dispute arose between Rishis and Devatas on the interpretation of an important issue in the scriptures. Lord Brahma advised Mother Saraswati to proceed to heaven and mediate in satisfactorily resolving the dispute. Saraswati proceeded to heaven. Kavya Purusha also followed her. Saraswati told him that he cannot go with her without permission from Lord Brahma and he has to stay behind till her return. Kavya Purusha stayed back and grew into a handsome man. He became friends with Kumara Swamy, son of Lord Shiva and Godess Parvati. In due course of time, Kavya Purusha felt lonely, became restless and started wandering aimlessly.

Kumara Swamy could not tolerate the suffering of his dear friend. He went to his mother Parvati and requested her to help his friend Kavya Purusha. Parvati thought for a while and decided that the best way to bring Kavya Purusha on track was to tie him in the knots of love of a girl. She produced a beautiful girl and named her as Saahitya Vidyaa (साहित्य विद्या). She told the girl that her fiancee was going away from her and she should follow him and get married to him.  Saahitya Vidyaa started following Kavya Purusha and followed him wherever he went.

Kavya Purusha wandered into different parts of the country. Saahitya Vidyaa followed him wherever he went. She tried different varieties of dresses and methods of beautification. Womenfolk of the respective areas also followed the same methods of dresses and beautifications. She tried different methods of music, dance and other allied methods to please Kavya Purusha. Kavya Purusha slowly took interest in her and started his own methods of dressing and appearances. The menfolk of the respective areas also followed him and therefore we have different methods of dresses and appearances in various parts of the country!

While moving around in the various parts of our large country thus, Kavya Purusha and Saahitya Vidyaa reached a city in Vidarbha called Vatsagulma, on the outskirts of Dandakaranya. The place got the name Vatsagulma as a Rishi by name Vatsa lived there. Saahitya Vidyaa and Kavya Purusha finally got married in this Vatsagulma city. (This Vatsagulma is presently known as Washim and is the headquarters of the Washim district in Maharashtra.)

The newly wed pair went to Saraswati and Parvati and sought their blessings. Both the mothers were very happy and blessed the pair and gave them many boons. They created a special heaven for them and named it as Kaviloka (कविलोक). The mothers advised Kavya Purusha and Saahitya Vidyaa to reside in the minds of all poets and bless them by inspiring them from time to time. The couple are following the advice of their mothers and are thus a source of inspiration to all poets even today.

Mention of Kavya Purusha is found in many places in puranas and also in Mahabharata. However, the story of Kavya Purusha and Saahitya Vidyaa in the above form is given to us by poet Raajashekhara in his "Kaavyameemamsa", considered as an epic in the field of Poetics.  The story is indeed interesting and inspiring!

Colour of Saraswati

The last post was about "Shree Pruthvivallabha", (click here to read it) referring to the war between Pulikeshi II and Harshavardhana in the Narmada river valley in 618-619 AD. This period of 7th century AD was a very fertile ground for growth of fine arts and literature. Temples and monuments constructed at that time as well as works of literature that are available even today bear testimony to this. There were many talented artistes and poets in the court of Pulikeshi II and other noted Kings of the period like The Gangas of Talakad and Pallavas of Kancheepuram, besides the Banavasi Kings.

Chandraditya was the eldest son of Pulikeshi II. Chandraditya's queen Vijayambike was herself a noted poet of that time. Vijayambike was known by different names such as Vijjika, Vijayakka (meaning elder sister Vijaya) and Vijaya Bhattarika. She is referred to as "Karnati" (Lady of Karnataka) and "Karnata Rajapriya" (Darling of the King of Karnataka). She is said to have been born in a courtesan family and well versed in music, dance and literature. In fact, there are claims that she was the foremost poet in Vaidharbhi style, next only to Mahakavi Kalidasa. She has written a five act drama by name "Kaumudi Mahotsavam".  She had earned the title "Karnata Saraswati".

Dandi or Dandin is considered as one of the foremost poet of that period. Researchers have established that he was in the court of Pallavas King Simhavishnu and later in the court of famous King Durvinita of the Ganga dynasty who ruled from Talakad near Mysore. His celebrated work "Kavyadarsha" is a highly respected source book in Poetics. He is also credited with two more prose works, "Dasha Kumara Charita" and "Avanti Sundari Katha". He is praised as a foremost exponent of "Padalalitya" or playing with words, in his works. He lived around the same period as Vijayambike. There was a running feud between Chalukyas and Pallavas with victory favoring one or the other in a long period of 6th and 7th centuries.

We see many photos of various deities, gods and goddesses that are sold in shops, displayed in temples and shown in calendars, books etc. These are based on the descriptions of the deities in Vedic hymns and artiste's impressions developed over a period of time. For example, the pictures of Goddess Lakshmi with two elephants on either side is a depiction based on her description from "Shree Suktam". All hymns describing Goddess Saraswati mention that she is all white; dressed in white, sitting on a white lotus, white swan as her chariot and she herself is white in colour. The picture of Saraswati given above is from such description in different sources.

Dandi has described that Saraswati is all white (नित्यशुक्ला सरस्वती) in the beginning of his "Kavyadarsha". Vijjika or Vijayambike, daughter in-law of Pulikeshi II and queen of his son Chandraditya came to know of this as she was a contemporary of Dandi. Vijjika herself was of dark complexion. She did not accept this description of Saraswati. She retorted thus:

नीलोत्पलद्लष्यमां विज्जिकां मामजानता |
वृथैव दण्डिना प्रोक्तं सर्वशुक्ला सरस्वती ||

Neelotpaladalashyamaam Vijjikaam maamajanataa
Vruthaiva Dandina proktam Sarvashukla Saraswati!

Dandi has not seen me, Vijjika, who is like a Blue Lotus. That is why he has mentioned that Saraswati is all white! (Had he seen me, he would have known that Saraswati is not white in colour. He would have mentioned that she is of dark complexion).

Vijjika represented a generation of women poets who were confident about themselves and stood on same footing as men as far back as over a thousand and three hundred years. She had the confidence to say that she was Saraswati personified!

Mother-in-law and Daughter-in-law

Then there was the question of the wise men being always poor. Why are wise men poor and stupid rich? The secret lies in the age old and well known chronicles of   "Saas aur Bahu".

It is believed in Mythology that Brahma, the creator was born in the Naabhikamal of Lord Vishnu. Hence the name Kamalanaabha for Maha Vishnu. Maa Lakshmi, Goddess of Wealth, is the consort of Lord Maha Vishnu. Maa Saraswati is the consort of Lord Brahma. Hence they become Mother-in-law and Daughter-in-law. Or in pure Hindi or filmy Hindi or even "Serial Hindi", Saas and Bahu.

Saas and Bahu do not get along. They are not supposed to get along.  Everyone says that two women do not get along. Two men may also not get along, but that is not a big deal. As some one said, it is no news if dog bites a man. It is only news when a man bites a dog. Since two women do not get along well or not supposed to get along well, Saas and Bahu will also not get along well, even more. Because of the common link of the Son/husband as applicable. Rather they should not get along well. Otherwise what is the fate of our Saas- Bahu serials. Balaji Telefilms shares would crash and our already fragile stock market index would trade in negative territory.

Furthermore, Lord Brahma is not Maa Lakshmi's son. He is not even her step son because the other wife is not there. He is her husband's son. Therefore Maa. Saraswati is not even her own Daughter-in-law. She is, as per law, her husband's daughter-in-law. Oh, this is a story of all complications thrown in one place. A script writer's delight.

As the MIL and DIL, with all the complicated relations apart, have to live together.  Lord Brahma cannot get down from the Lotus and go to a separate house since there is this thousand headed serpent Aadishesha below the Lotus and the large ocean of milk all round the area.  Maa. Lakshmi and Maa. Saraswati have to co-exist in one house. That is Sree Vaikuntha. There is no rule that they should also stay together in other houses - like the houses of Vidwaans (learned or wise) and the Stupid. Therefore, Maa Saraswati stays with the wise and per force Maa.Lakshmi lives with the Stupid. Which explains the natural phenomenon of the wise being always very poor and the stupid being rich.

One poet wanted to confront Maa. Lakshmi with this question. He went to her and asked the question. The question and answer is summarized in this sloka:

पद्मे, मूढ जने ददासि द्रविणं विद्वस्तु किं मत्सरः ?
नाहं मत्सरिणी नचापि चपला नैवास्ति मूर्खे रतिः
मूर्खीभेयो द्रविणं ददामि नितरां तत् कारणं श्रूयतां
विद्वान् सर्व जनेषु पूजित तनुः मूर्खस्य नान्या गतिः !

Padme, Moodha jane daddasi dravinam vidvastu kim matsaraha?
Naaham matsarini nachaapi chapala naivasti murkhe ratihi
Moorkhebhyo dravinam dadami nitaraam tat karanam shruyataam
vidvaan sarvajaneshu poojita tanuhu moorkhasya naanya gatihi !

"He Padma, you are enriching all stupid fellows by bestowing all riches on them. What is your grouse against the wise?  Why have you kept them poor?"

"I have no grouse against the wise. Nor I am fickle minded as others allege. I have no undue interest in the foolish. Why I give lot of riches to the foolish? Understand this very well.  The wise or vidwans are respected by all for their wisdom. The foolish have no such recourse".

(Everyone ignores the foolish. If they are  at least rich, they will be respected  for the riches. Both are my sons. One is able to earn respect due to his wisdom. The other one will get respect because he is rich. This is the mother's way of compensating the weak child).

*******
This is the situation as it existed several centuries ago. It is no longer true now.

We have seen several households where the Mother-in-law and Daughter-in law get along better than Father-in-law and son-in-law. Or father and son. They even enjoying living in the same house. Hence we now have wisdom and riches in same houses. Maa. Lakshmi and Maa. Saraswati in the same houses. Like the occasional episode of Saas-Bahu serial in which the Saas and Bahoo together catch the thief !

If you do not believe ask Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook. Ask Bill Gates. Jerry Yang of Yahoo. Sabir Bhatia of Hotmail. Steve Jobs of Apple. And many others.....in whose houses both Mother-in-law and Daughter-in-law reside together in full strength..............
