Working Hours is the topic of all discussions everywhere today. Fire in Los Angeles is the topic of discussion for some people. But the raging fire in discussions on working hours appears to have overtaken the other real fire for now. There are firefighters fighting the fire in Los Angels. But more and more people are adding fuel to the fire in the discussion on working hours issue. Those who are in working periods of their lives are naturally discussing working hours. Those who are well past the working periods of their lives are also discussing working hours issue. Those who never worked in their lives in the past nor are likely to work in the remainder of their lives are also worried about it. Of course, retired people are fully devoting their valuable time in discussing the working hours issue endlessly, purely because it is important when they start working in their next life, if there is any. .

It was more than a year ago, sometime in September, 2023, that the seeds of this discussion fire were sown. Sri NR Narayana Murthy, founder of the software giant Infosys, was in the middle of a podcast with former Infosys CEO Sri Mohandas Pai. He recalled his student days and the difficulties he and his generation faced in those days. They were in the 1960s. Most of the families were unable to provide higher education to their children. Though intelligent, hardworking and deserving higher education, many were deprived of it. The hostel facilities were minimal and rare. PG accommodations and student loans were not heard of. Students depended on community hostels and large heartedness of rich and philanthropic people.
He mentioned about his getting a scholarship and paying highly subsidised fee. Capitation fees had not yet arrived. In this background, he observed that he and his generation owed a debt to the society. Having received such support from the government and society, they had the responsibility for working more than others and compensate the society. He mentioned that he worked 85 to 90 hours a week and he certainly did not regret it. He made a mention that 70 hours work in a week was required.
He had also talked about other issues like nation building, technology, his company Infosys and many others. He also clarified that he doesn't think hours were important. "All that it means is that you have to be very productive, you have to work very hard like the Germans did after World War I, like the Japanese did, and we owe it to the poor people in our society to work hard and make the quality of their life a little bit better" he said.
As it usually happens, most people did not listen or read of all he said. The issue of 70 hours work per week was picked up and played out again and again.

The issue was being discussed off and on for over a year. It got additional fodder last week. Sri S H Subramanyan, Chairman of L&T, was trying to make a point as to how a Sunday could be more productive. He observed: "How long can you stare at your wife? What can you do sitting at home?". The issue of hours of work per week, work-life balance etc. again took centre stage.
While the company executives tried to defend the statement of the chairman, trade unions lambasted him. Social media had a field day, and continue to have field days, on the issue. Feminists are also up in arms. Maybe be it would have been better he had instead said: "How long can you stare at your husband? What can you do sitting at home?" to balance the gender bias.

Shortly thereafter, last Saturday, the issue came up in a discussion with Shri Anand Mahindra, Chairman of Mahindra Group. He said quality of work is more important than hours at work. Among other things, he said "My wife is wonderful. I love staring at her". It made even bigger news. He explained why he is on "X" (or formerly Twitter) as it gives him feedback from a large section of people and helps in forming his business ideas.
Again staring at wife started making news. Sri Narayana Murthy had mentioned about the quality of work and the hours of work. But hours of work per week again took centre stage. Those who were using the weekends or Sundays string at others wives (or husbands, just to balance gender bias) were probably highly disappointed as that stream did not make much news.

This is the world of AI or Artificial Intelligence. The only AI my generation knew was Air India. Now the only thing that comes to anyone's mind when AI is mentioned is Artificial intelligence. When everything in our lives is artificial, why intelligence should only be human? Hence AI is indeed here. Photoshop is another wonderful tool that can make and unmake things. In these two, we have fire and oxygen. That is sufficient for things to burn. Of course, idle minds are the real combustible items. Then there are Facebook, WhatsApp and other social media to spread the fire.
There are two pictures used in this post. Both are borrowed from the ones circulating on WhatsApp. The top one appeared immediately after the statement by L&T Chairman. The one below came up soon thereafter. It looks like one by R K Laxman, but looks as a recent one. There are hundreds of others on the same topic right now. Amul stares at bread everyday is just one of them.

Before advent of computers and internet, physical presence was an important requirement for any work or job. One had to go to shop or office or establishment to do work. Late coming and early going was permitted under separate rules. There were people attending office physically regularly, but working remotely (rarely) then. Computers and software development jobs brought in the concept of "working Remotely" and "Working Off-campus". "Working from Home" and "Working from Anywhere" were strengthened by Covid or Corona. My granddaughter used to say, when she was four year old, that she would become an Astronaut, but work from home.
Physical presence is required, unfortunately, in some jobs even now. Food can be ordered online, but there must be someone to make food there in the outlet. Robots are already making food in some countries. A day may come when we have an App that will make, consume and digest all the food, but holding the mobile with that App will give ius a feeling of being well fed. If the App develops indigestion, there can be another App to treat and rectify it.

In the middle of all the discussion on work hours per week, working hours or working days, work-life balance, wife or husband or neighbour staring, and so on, there are some people who continue to work more than 90 or 100 hours per week or even more. Such discussions don't bother them. They are also enjoying working like that. They are also doing many other things in life, routine as well as special. They have a contented and balanced life. They are rare, but do exist. Have you seen any one of that type recently?
